The Quince celebration symbolizes her coming of age and introduction to society as a women.  A typical quince has become an event of such magnitude that families usually start saving for the party from the day a daugther is born - not unreasonable when one considers that a traditional quince party can cost from ten to fifteen thousand dollars.  But glamour and spending aside, mothers confess they love this celebration because it gives them a unique opportunity to bond with their teenage daughters.

A typical quince is held in a ballroom and starts with a brief introduction of the young lady by the master of ceremonies, followed by a narrated video or photo montage of her life and achievements.  Eventually the stage is illuminated, the curtains part, and the celebrant appears in a beautiful setting - a field of flowers festooned with papier-mache butterflies, a lush medittereanean garden with trickling fountains or even a princess carousel.  It is very typical to hire a cheoreographer to guide the 15 couples to learn the steps of Cuban dance from the 1930's and 1940's.  After the grand presentation the quinceanera then parades slowly around the stage in a long dress while family and friends look in admiration.  After she dances with her father, the fourteen couples join her and a new dance partner, usually a beau, for a waltz, a mambo, or a cha-cha.  After the dance, a toast is made and fifteen honored friends and family members present her with a candle, one for each year of her life.  Quinces are more popular than ever because of young people's renewed interest in Latin music and a quest to find their roots and their traditions.
